We Ruck to declare, “No More!”

Last week, Declare No More Foundation held its annual Ruck at Port Tampa Bay – just a short distance away from where some of the highest rates of local human trafficking activity occur. 

What is a Ruck? 

This was the most common question we received while promoting the event! A ruck, by definition, is a form of exercise that involves walking or hiking outdoors while wearing a weighted backpack (rucksack) with the goal of building strength and endurance. It originates from military training exercises. 

The goal of our ruck was to raise awareness and donations to fund safe housing solutions for survivors of human trafficking who carry a heavy weight daily. With every step, we walked with intentionality for those trapped and desperate for a way out. We rucked for their freedom. Through this event and partnership with incredible sponsors, we raised enough funds to provide 250 nights of safety to survivors. 

Port Tampa Bay opened their doors to provide us with a place to launch from and TECO sponsored the event, drawing people of all ages from Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties. Some attendees drove over an hour to participate. Others brought their children. There were dogs, and strollers, and mobility scooters – all coming together to declare, “No More!”

“This morning, my son and I rucked a 5K to support Declare No More Foundation,” one attendee shared. “Rucking every mile felt like a small way to put our energy behind something that matters. Proud of my son for waking up early, going the distance, and helping to pick up ALL the information signs on the way back.”

It was amazing to see how this event moved all of us to action. Friendships and business relationships were formed. There were even commitments to volunteer, facilitate a human trafficking training, and to host more opportunities for the whole community to come together.
