5 SIGNS OF
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
You Might Miss

Thank you for standing with us to declare, "No More!"

Human trafficking Is often hidden in plain sight, behind everyday interactions, subtle behaviors, and moments we dismiss too quickly. As Christians, we are called not just to care … but to see.

Here are five signs that are often overlooked - but could mean someone needs help.

THEY AVOID EYE CONTACT OR SEEM AFRAID TO SPEAK FREELY

It’s easy to assume someone is shy or introverted. But sometimes, fear is being controlled.

A victim may:

  • Avoid eye contact completely
  • Look to another person before answering
  • Seem unusually anxious in normal conversation

Traffickers often control how and when victims communicate, even punishing them for speaking freely.

What to notice:
Does their behavior feel like fear… not personality?

THEIR STORY DOESN'T QUITE ADD UP

Most of us don’t interrogate inconsistencies.

But small gaps can be telling.

You might hear:

  • Confusion about where they are or where they’ve been
  • Vague or rehearsed answers
  • Details that change over time

This isn’t always intentional, it can be the result of manipulation, trauma, or control.

What to notice:
Do the details feel unclear, inconsistent, or coached?

Sudden Change in Appearance, Behavior, or Relationships

Trafficking often involves grooming & control, which can show up in sudden life changes. This could include:

  • A drastic shift in clothing or appearance
  • New relationships that feel concerning or controlling
  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or normal routines
  • A new, unhealthy attachment to devices and online platforms

These changes are often explained away, but they can be signals.

What to notice:
Is this a normal phase… or something deeper?

They Seem Controlled by Someone Else

This is one of the most overlooked signs.

A trafficker may not look threatening. In fact, they often appear protective, attentive, even charming.

But watch for:

  • Someone speaking for them
  • Not allowing them to be alone
  • Monitoring conversations closely

What to notice:
Does the person have freedom, or are they being managed?

Something Just Feels Off

This may be the most important one.

You don’t need to be an expert to notice when something doesn't feel right.

  • A look
  • A tone
  • A dynamic
  • A moment that lingers

We often ignore these instincts. But awareness starts with paying attention.

What to notice:
Don’t dismiss what you feel, lean into it.
